Where Are the Vibe-Coded Success Stories
Someone asked me where all the vibe-coded app success stories are. Fair question, and the honest answer starts with what success even means.
It depends who you ask. For some it is users, even ones who do not pay. For others it is running a real business. Plenty of people just mean something that made their day easier. Those are very different bars, and a story that clears one will miss another.
So let me give a concrete one. We are an AI shop and we use coding agents heavily. We also have a commercial product that is 100% bootstrapped, makes money, and pays salaries. That is as real as success gets for us.
We did not get there by pointing agents at the codebase and letting them slop features. The agents are useful tools and we still need engineers behind them. The pure vibe-coded success story is rare because the part that makes a product actually work is still the engineering, and the agent does not supply that on its own.
So the bar moved. We need fewer of "any" developer and more genuinely great ones. Strong developers get more leverage and more work out of these tools, while mediocre ones end up fighting over the bottom of the market. The success stories are real, they just have good engineers underneath them.
Which is why the popular advice these days is dangerous. The common line is to not bother learning to code at all because the agents will handle it. Following that is going to quietly close doors for a lot of people, because the opportunities go to the ones who understood the machine, not the ones who skipped it.
Programmers are not going away, with or without agents. The uncomfortable part is the other side of that. Why pay for a slop developer when an agent can do the same job, faster and often better? Being good was always worth it. Now it is the whole game.
